Carrie Evans, an Account Executive at Alabama Graphics, and Blackjack Horticulture came together to create a masterpiece. Carrie’s background in graphic design, along with Blackjack’s amazing landscape work resulted in the magnificent piece above.
Q: How did the design come about?
A: I met with the client to discuss different pieces they wanted for their walls that would highlight their past work. When I first went in they were strictly looking at canvas, so I took that opportunity to show them all the other options. I began showing them pictures from other jobs where we had cut out the letters to have the logo on the wall.
I suggested, instead of making the logo from pictures of their previous work, we do the opposite and cut the logo out of one of the pictures. The owner wanted to see what that would look like so I did a mockup in Photoshop (below) to give him an idea of what I meant. They ended up really liking the design and wanted to go with it!
Q: What all goes into creating a piece like this?
A: First, I took a vector version of their logo and thickened a few of the lines so it would really show up well. Then we printed the artwork on the flatbed printer directly onto gator board, which is a heavier duty version of foamcore.
The machine that does the cutting is called a Zund. It cut out the whole logo. This project was opposite of what we usually do; this time we took out the letters and the void was what was left. Typically, with the regular letters, you don’t have any extra parts except for maybe the dot of an I. So it was kind of like a little puzzle when it was all said and done.
Q: Any advantages to the material used?
A: You know how a picture hangs a little bit away from the wall and can wobble or get crooked? Since all of these elements are individual, like the triangle inside of the A or bubbles inside of the B, they’re all individually mounted and flush to the wall. So ultimately it’s all straight and won’t get crooked over time.
Also if they ever need to take it off, since it’s applied with heavy duty foam tape, it won’t damage the wall. Usually when you put something up, you have to deal with whatever comes with taking it down, such as patching holes or repainting. This is just an added perk.
I greatly enjoyed working with Blackjack Horticulture and look forward to our future projects together!
