If you’ve been by Railroad Park recently, no doubt you’ve seen the progress on the new home of the Birmingham Barons – Regions Field, scheduled to open for the first pitch of the 2013 season next April.
The new Regions Field is the latest development in Birmingham’s rich baseball history, dating back to the creation of the “Coal Barons” baseball team in 1885. The new structure will feature architectural elements reminiscent of Birmingham’s industrial history, like archways of the type found in the steel warehouses that used to surround Railroad Park. Plans are being drawn up for a museum near the field honoring the players of Birmingham’s Negro League team, which included Satchel Page and a teenaged Willie Mays.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on Feb. 2, and updates are available on the Barons’ homepage.
