What to Look For in a Digital Speciality Printer: Attitude

In our series we have discussed three areas so far of what to look for in a commercial digital specialty printer: Experience, Know-How, and Equipment.  By now you know how important it is to find a commercial printer with vast experience and knowledge, as well as one who prints on, or sells and services, top of the line equipment. But what about attitude?  What if they are great in all of those other areas, but have bad attitudes?  No matter how large or small your job is, you deserve positive customer service, which all starts with a good attitude.

In a time when it feels that customer service is a dying art, we feel that it is more important than ever.  At Alabama Graphics we have worked hard to build up our resumes to better ourselves, but all of that experience would be worthless without our customers. Continue reading

What to Look for in a Digital Specialty Printer: Equipment

Commercial printing can be an intimidating area to go into, especially if you don’t know exactly what to look for.  The goal of this series is to help you determine exactly that – what to look for.  Over the past couple of weeks we have talked about what to look for in a commercial printer as it relates to experience and know-how.  This week, we want to discuss equipment.  Continue reading

What to look for in a Digital Specialty Printer: "Know- How"

Last week we covered what to look for with regards to experience.  This week, in part two of our four part series on “What to Look for in a Digital Specialty Printer” we discuss what to look for with regards to “know-how”.

Experience is the first key to look for, as we discussed.  But what is experience without knowledge?  A company could have been around for a long time but if their team has not updated their areas of expertise and grown with all of the emerging technologies, then that experience is not as impressive anymore.  When researching a commercial printer, you should look for one that has knowledge of how everything works, and knows what you need (sometimes even before you have figured it out.)  Continue reading

Finding Construction Connections at ASCE/APWA Summer Meeting

Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Ala.

By Lauri Newton, Alabama Graphics Account Executive

I spent a few days earlier this month with our friends in the Alabama section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the Alabama Chapter of the American Public Works Society (APWA) at their summer meeting. We gathered at the gorgeous Perdido Beach Resort in Orange Beach, Ala.

More than 300 members from both these organizations checked out Alabama Graphics’ information on our iPlan table and our eSuite services, both popular topics of conversation as engineers and project managers are always looking for new ways to leverage technology to make sharing information easier, faster and more reliable. I also had lots of conversations with attendees about the emerging technologies we’re seeing in 3D printing, and about how Alabama Graphics is evaluating ways we might be able to help them in making models for upcoming projects.

But aside from all the great conversations I had with folks on how they were using printing technologies in the AEC industry, I also had the chance to connect with some new and different folks across the industry. My neighbor in the exhibit hall was Jason Hewatt, who works for Foley Arch, a precast concrete specialty company based in the Atlanta area. I learned from Jason that Foley Arch provided components to help build the bridge that leads to Sanford Stadium on the University of Georgia campus.

But before these components could be used, they had to be tested for composition and durability. And who performed those tests? The research staff at the Highway Research Center in Auburn University’s Harbert Engineering Center! I couldn’t help but let a “War Eagle!” loose when I learned about Auburn’s involvement in a UGA construction project!

We’re all connected here in construction across the Southeast. It was great to find these connections at the Summer Meeting, and I look forward to meeting more of our construction compatriots at future gatherings!
